Linking Bio-signals to Transfer of Knowledge: Towards Mind-reading ECAs?

$%675$&7 Transfer of knowledge is important in learning environments. Especially virtual tutors have difficulties in reading what is on students’ minds. In this exploratory experiment participants’ brain and heart signals were measured during the playback of a movie to predict possible loss of attention. The movie contained an actor explaining a task. Participants were divided into two groups: one watched an informal movie and the other a formal movie. Participants were tested afterwards to determine their performance on the task. The bio-signals were analyzed synchronously to the movie events. Results sometimes show an indication for attention, however no reliable predictor for the absence of transfer was found. Also no big differences were found between the two different styles. Further research can be performed with a more specific task in order to investigate isolated effects of bio-signals.
